  • Eaton’s Grid Edge solution

With Eaton’s Grid Edge solution, you can improve situational awareness and extend your processing capabilities to the edge of the distribution network, bringing data processing closer to the source and enabling faster, more efficient, and more secure data-driven applications.

From edge to enterprise

Renewables. EV. Storage. These technologies are transforming the way the grid works, adding a high volume of passive edge systems that need digital capability. To optimise this increasingly complex grid and improve quality of service, you’ll need to reimagine the way you manage data on the edge.

While enterprise management systems are well equipped to meet traditional IT and OT requirements, the rapid influx of new technologies requires additional computing capacity to meet the massive amount of data being generated. Intelligent, compact and evolutive automation platforms like the SMP DA-3050 automation platform, integrate back-end systems and provide visibility to events on the edge.

A few application examples: Utilities can use Grid Edge solution to monitor the edge to help improve the grid stability and reliability affected by DERs/EV integration at the grid edge. Feeding ADMS/SCADA systems with quality data allows for raising the edge situational awareness and supporting operators in their decision process to maintain voltage level stability and address reverse power flow issues. The automation platform can also optimise the use of distributed energy resources (DER) by implementing control logic at the grid edge, reducing the burden on centralised systems. Finally, it provides equipment health data to optimise maintenance schedules and reduce unplanned outages.
Utility outcome and benefits Key features
  • Make data-driven decisions due to valuable data and insights brought to ADMS/SCADA systems
  • Improve grid edge situational awareness
  • Efficient management of DERs, ensuring grid stability and reliability
  • Improve availability under extreme scenarios
  • Ensure safety and cybersecurity across the grid
  • Meet regulatory compliance requirements
  • Optimise maintenance schedules supported by device health data
  • Powerful CPU and flexible storage capacity for data acquisition and processing
  • Real-time monitoring and control capabilities

A few application examples: Utilities can use Eaton’s Grid Edge solution to digitalise old primary assets (e.g., motor-operated switch/disconnectors) or modernise legacy secondary assets (adding a security layer to legacy IEDs or acting as an IEC 61850 front-end).  It can also replace obsolete RTU/PLC used in various applications such as generation DAM monitoring and control.
Utility outcome and benefits Key features
  • Cost reduction by integrating multiple functions into a single device
  • Streamline grid modernisation by extending the life of legacy assets
  • Reduce deployment costs and optimise device life cycle management
  • Ensure compliance with future requirements
  • Multi-function automation platform (Data concentrator, protocol translator, 4G connectivity, local I/O and embedded HMI)
  • Interoperability with legacy devices
