'easy' does it: Celebrating 25 years!
When we introduced the 'easy’ compact control relay device back in 1998, it changed everything. Old-fashioned manual control became a thing of the past, and in came a variety of functions that were new at the time, including ethernet connections.
The product’s evolution over the next 25 years, from easy400 to easyE4, along with the continuous development of supporting software and accessories, has made the 'easy’ range a leader in its field ever since, a position it continues to hold to this day.
“From easy400 to easyE4, the evolution of the product has been a continuous development process. We looked at what was happening the market, as well as the technical possibilities. Since the beginning, its unique selling point has been its affordability and simplicity, especially for electricians who did not like initialising programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The product was designed as an ‘all-in-one’ replacement for contactor control devices, and it went on to make a great contribution to establishing control relays in the marketplace – something that paved the way for other companies in the same industry!”
– Dieter Bauerfeind, first product manager (now retired)
The beauty of this device is that it is possible to adapt its functionality to create new versions of ‘easy’ – and doing this, as the name suggests, is easy. The handling, the software, the way the device functions and the way it is programmed, have all been developed with the customer in mind. ‘easy’ makes light work of implementing a control relay, and at the same time offers sophisticated features and functionality.
“What sets the ‘easy’ apart from other products is that it requires no training. Anyone can start using it immediately; it is that simple! As we have expanded the ‘easy’ portfolio, we have enhanced its functionality without compromising its simplicity. In our latest versions of the ‘easy’, we have updated the hardware and user interfaces to suit new generations of users, while maintaining compatibility with previous versions, which saves time and money for our customers.”
– Ralf Dick, Software development
“Since I started with hardware development from the very beginning of ‘easy’, the 25-year history of these devices is a big part of my history too. Despite a tough battle to lead the market against keen competition, I believe that we have remained technologically ahead. The evolution of EASY in the last 25 years accurately reflects the technological progress made over those years. The latest version, easyE4, is unique in the market as it provides ‘UC’ (universal current: supporting 24 VDC, 24 VAC and 12 VDC supply voltage and inputs in one device) devices, and all types of extensions (regardless of the supply voltage) to be combined without any restrictions.”
– Horea-Stefan Culca, hardware engineer (now senior hardware engineer)
At the Hanover fair in April 2019, the former product manager for the easyE4, Sascha Lindemann, presented the new generation of the control relay. The device series came with a new design and extended functions, but retained its simplicity when it came to programming and handling. Find out more in the video.
“When we launched the ‘easy’ 25 years ago, control cabinets were normally built using a lot of timers, counters and auxiliary relays. This involved a lot of time-consuming wiring, which could also lead to manual errors. If the customer chose to use a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) instead, they would then need special software and program knowledge, something that could only be done by experienced users. The gap that arose from this was solved by Klockner Moeller, now Eaton, who developed and introduced a simple entry-level controller – the ‘easy’. It was so easy to use that we used to say that if you can draw your circuit on paper, you can program your ‘easy’ entry-level controller. The key reason for our success was the uncomplicated way of programming and our continuous improvement. The improvements were done using feedback received from our customers with a clear focus on small and mid-size projects. In the last 25 years, the ‘easy’ has been developed to have many new functionalities, like webserver functionality, coloured display, choice of program language, etc., that make it a favoured control relay. I am looking forward to the coming 25 years and the journey ‘easy’ will make.”
– Frank van der Laan, Product line sales manager (previously Product manager)
“I am happy to be part of the ‘easy’ team and to have this opportunity of celebrating this important anniversary! It is a significant milestone in our company’s history, which shows our commitment to making what matters work! When it comes to this product, our commitment and responsibility towards our customers is what matters. Providing them with solutions like ‘easy’ is an essential part of adding value to our customers’ daily work. Over the last 25 years we have had four major generations of ‘easy’, hence easyE4, which is our current and most sophisticated generation of control relays. The continuous improvement which we drive towards is embedded in our DNA. With our diverse team of highly motivated engineers, we have always been able to look ahead of our time and prepare the next generation of ‘easy’ to stay in front of market developments.”
– Daniel Jansen, Product manager easyE4
“What we tend to call simply, the ‘easy’ is really – at heart – an excellent ongoing success story. I have created a lot of individual customer success stories around the ‘easy’ over the years and for that reason I have been in touch with customers on many occasions to discuss their application stories with them. Therefore, I know that this is a product which makes our customers truly delighted with the relationship between price and what the control relay delivers. I think the high degree of flexibility that ‘easy’ provides for all kinds of applications, and the nature of the steadily growing offer, with lots of useful features on board, makes this product truly special.”
– Bernd Cürten, Segment marketing (now retired)
The history of the easy product range is a story of numerous product expansions, various customer success stories and diverse sales campaigns.
