Approaching innovation with a vision for the future

With the right blend of in-house expertise and partnerships, our collaborative approach to research and development (R&D) results in long-lasting technology driven answers to our customers' power management challenges.

From digitalization and the Internet of Things (IoT) to advanced materials, additive manufacturing, power electronics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), we’re focused on what the world and our customers need next. Whether it’s developing new ways to meet growing energy demands or opportunities for more sustainable manufacturing, our goal is to provide customers with safe, sustainable and efficient intelligent power management solutions. And our approach to research and development (R&D), focused on leveraging technology to design solutions that meet the needs of our customers today and into the future, enables us to do just that.

We know that to support evolving market demands, we need to continue to evolve our processes too. We’re improving our manufacturing processes, while strengthening our supply chain and ensuring our teams are equipped with the required skills and knowledge of the latest engineering principles and practices. Our global teams work together to make sure our product portfolio is right for today and ready for the future so our customers can be prepared for whatever lies ahead.

A focus on the future

A comprehensive approach to research and development

While our businesses focus on meeting the needs of our customers today, our R&D teams are busy planning ahead and developing future-proof technology. Our approach to R&D spreads responsibilities across three teams:
Eaton Research Labs (ERLs)
Female engineer working on 3D printer additive manufacturing
Our ERLs are focused on innovation for organic growth. This unique team focuses on future megatrends and keeps the pulse on how our industries continue to grow and change in areas like energy systems, additive manufacturing, grid intelligence and low and medium voltage power electronics. By maintaining a focus on the future, our ERLs are positioned to propose projects that will keep our businesses prepared to address the trends of tomorrow.
Center for Intelligent Power (CIP)
Industry 4 digitalization modern business technology
The future relies heavily on data— from physical sensors embedded in products that collect the data, to the algorithms that make sense of the data, to the insights the data helps generate. Whether it’s edge computing where customers can access real-time data to influence immediate decisions, or cloud computing for deeper analysis, the CIP is turning raw data into actionable insights with data science and custom algorithms to drive decision making, improve business performance and enable intelligent power management.
Eaton India Innovation Center (EIIC)

Made up of multiple centers of excellence and partnered with our businesses, the EIIC focuses on developing more sustainable technologies, products and design processes in areas like modeling and simulation, controls and reliability, embedded systems and digital prototyping.

Extensive collaborative partnerships

Our innovation strategy relies on trusted partnerships across academia, national labs, research institutes, non-profits, suppliers, competitors, government agencies and industry-specific organizations around the world. These partnerships allow us to give back to our communities through teaching opportunities, while generating unique opportunities for collaboration with industry leaders. And all while fostering a continuous learning environment for our engineers.

Our government partnerships specifically, span 12 different countries and offer us unique opportunities to participate in early state technologies and accelerate new product development and testing in addition to unique opportunities for customer feedback gathering.

Being a trusted partner is a testament to a history of collaboration that continues to result in new funding and technical opportunities for Eaton and our customers.
