Whether it’s a metered PDU or a managed PDU (otherwise known as a switched PDU), you’ll need to determine what level of control your infrastructure power requires. Metered input PDUs offer branch-level metering, while metered outlet PDUs provide metering at individual outlets for billing-grade accuracy. For the most advanced capabilities, choose managed PDU technology that provides outlet-level switching (i.e. you can turn an individual outlet off and on remotely) and outlet-level monitoring, both of which help reinforce uptime for critical loads.
Look for models that include network connectivity, push button controls and a display screen.

Having enough electrical power to adequately supply your data center deployment is a big deal. When selecting an input cord and plug, research the amount of power it provides to the rack PDU along with the total power consumption of your IT equipment.
Don't forget to plan for growth and expansion. If you think your data center will grow, be sure that you’re considering power distribution to avoid designing yourself into a corner.
Don’t forget to double check that the length of the rack PDU line cord fits your space. If it’s too long, you’ll have extra cord to stuff into your rack enclosure. If it’s too short, you won’t be able to plug it in or you may be forced to position the rack PDU in a less than ideal location.
You can integrate temperature and humidity monitoring with your rack PDUs. With the Eaton Environmental Monitoring Probe (EMPs), you can daisy chain up to three EMPs to monitor the top, middle and bottom of your rack enclosures.
If you’ve ever had to configure IT equipment in the back of a dark cabinet, you’ll know that the right color can enhance visual idenification. You can take advantage of various rack PDU colors, labelling and cabling to clearly identify which PDU is your A side and which one is your B side.

Before selecting a rackmount PDU, you should consider weight and mounting capabilities. Look for options such as tool-less mounting, low profile form factors and a light-weight aluminum chassis to ease your deployment woes. In some installations, a PDU with end-entry input can offer more flexibility and room to maneuver than those with front-entry input.
