At Eaton, our vision is to improve the quality of life and the environment through the use of our power management technologies and services. And we live this vision by being active stewards of our environment, whether it's creating innovative products for our customers to help them use power more efficiently or reducing the carbon footprint of our operations and encouraging our suppliers to do the same.
Our most recently publicly available data are provided in the table below:
Scope | 1 | 150,674 metric tons of CO2e from natural gas combustion in RY2017 |
Scope | 2 | 740,493 metric tons of CO2e from consumption of purchased electricity in RY2017, using the Location-based approach 732,736 metric tons of CO2e from consumption of purchased electricity in RY2017, using the Market-based approach |
Scope | 3 | 67,779,800 metric tons of CO2e from other sources |
We’re heeding the global call for nations and businesses to work together to address climate change. The 2015 Paris Agreement creates a common framework for organisations worldwide to take actions that aim to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
As part of this effort, businesses are encouraged to calculate and reduce their emissions according to this threshold. We have committed to setting a science-based target for our direct and indirect emissions for the period of 2019-2030. In 2018, we set a 1-year absolute GHG reduction target of two per cent.
Science-based targets allow us to think differently about our future, and help us to establish meaningful reduction levels—as well as the long-term path for achieving them. We are currently developing an energy and carbon reduction road map that includes options for energy efficiency projects, on-site and off-site renewables, as well as renewable energy purchase programmes (green tariffs).

When we say “we make what matters work,” that means we’re also helping to make a healthy planet work. Indexed to sales, our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decreased by 3.4 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016. We beat our 2017 GHG target by emitting about 6,000 metric tons fewer GHGs. On an absolute basis, we decreased our GHG emissions by 6,000 metric tons (from 974,000 to 968,000), or 0.7 per cent compared to the previous year. Since 2015, we have reduced the total amount of GHGs emitted by our operations from 1,010,000 metric tons to 968,000, which equals a 4.2 per cent reduction. Indexed to sales, we decreased our GHG emissions by 1.4 per cent over the period.
Throughout our facilities we completed 84 energy reduction projects in 2017, which resulted in a cumulative reduction of 7,000 metric tons of GHGs during the year. These projects included lighting and machine efficiency upgrades, manufacturing process optimisations, heat recovery and other efforts.
