A real alternative to micro PLCs: The next generation of control relays

Historically, many low to medium complexity applications had to be operated using a micro PLC or a standard PLC because traditional control relays or logical controler did not offer the required flexibility and resources. Development times and the cost per machine can now be significantly reduced thanks to the next generation of smart control relays with Ethernet communications and programming flexibility using structured text.

The new generation of programmable control relays can be compared with micro PLCs

Simple machine building projects can quickly become more complex when they are undergoing design revisions. In the past, traditional control relays could get to their limits of functionality or connectable I/O. The new generation of intelligent control relays is breaking these boundaries with notably more connectable I/O, fast Ethernet and web server functionality and modular programming using structured text. These smart relays today provide an extremely competitive alternative to small PLCs.

Control relays were not considered for use in automation projects for a long time - their possibilities were too limited. Ulrich Kanngießer author of various textbooks on small controls and about programming with structured text examines the possibilities of modern control relays in his white paper. Using the example of Eaton's easyE4 control relay, he demonstrates how, in many cases, high-performance control relays can become an alternative to a small PLC thanks to the use of multiple programming languages, modular software concepts in combination with flexible hardware with multiple I/O options.

Customer Success Stories

With the easyE4, the next generation of smart control relays, it is now possible to implement more flexible application designs.

“The easyE4 is simple to install and the configuration is quick and easy, which means that even small projects of greater complexity can be realized quickly.”

Leon Hellbernd, Electrical engineer at Hellbernd Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG

Collecting eggs made easy

With seven networked easyE4s control relays from, Hellbernd implemented an easy-to-use control concept for an egg collection and transport system. By using the easyE4, the wiring effort was reduced, space in the control cabinet was saved and a cost-effective, decentralized control system was designed.

App-based payment for self-service car wash centers

Via the easyE4's integrated Ethernet interface, the system can be connected directly to the Ready2Wash IoT gateway. This not only allows contactless payment via smartphone, but also opens up new customer service and evaluation possibilities.

Multi-purpose mobile air cleaning units (ACUs)

The company Salema Technology B. V. developed together with Eaton and its Lean-Solution-Partner PICA multi-purpose mobile air cleaning units (ACUs) that surpass the conventional market solutions in terms of safety, performance, user-friendliness and environmental protection. It can be used to clean the air in a hospital, prevent the spread of viruses through the system or to remove odors from the air, such as those caused by a forest fire.

Disinfecting made easy

The french company SIMEF Industrie developed together with Eaton an easy-to-use device to disinfect superstore carts thoroughly and quickly. The solution can be used by everyone - including customers.

Traditional small controls often can’t cope if a customer application grows more complex over time. With its 11 expansion modules and flexible programming in ST, the easyE4 has much more to offer in this regard. The Ethernet connection not only makes it possible to connect various devices and touch panels of all sizes, but it can also be used to integrate applications into larger IT networks or even to connect them to the cloud.

In addition, the easyE4’s NET connection makes it possible to design modular systems without creating additional traffic on the Ethernet network. With the easy communication module for SmartWire-DT (SWD), the advantages of the powerful control relay are also available connected to the intelligent wiring system in an ideal way.
