UL 60601-1, also known as the Standard for Safety of Medical Electrical Equipment, focuses on the safety requirements of medical electrical equipment to ensure they are safe for use in healthcare facilities. It addresses factors such as electrical insulation, leakage currents, grounding and construction in effort to reduce the risk of electrical hazards to patients and healthcare staff. UL 60601-1 applies to a variety of AC and battery-powered medical equipment including ultrasound machines, patient monitors, infusion pumps, defibrillators and medical IT equipment.
UL 2930, also known as the Healthcare Facility Outlet Assemblies (HCOA), designates safety standards for cord-and-plug devices used to connect medical equipment in a patient care vicinity including infusion pumps, patient monitors and diagnostic devices. This standard addresses safety requirements related to insulation, grounding, leakage currents and electrical hazards to reduce the risk of shock to patients and healthcare staff during device operation.
UL 1363A sets forth safety standards for mobile power strips, also known as relocatable power taps, integrated as components of a larger system for use in a patient care vicinity where medical electrical equipment is present. This includes patient care rooms, clinics and assisted living facilities. This safety standard designates the construction and design requirements of mobile power strips to ensure reliability, and specifies grounding requirements to ensure protection of patients, staff and sensitive equipment.
Get the power you need, where you need it. Relocatable power strips with antimicrobial coating provide enhanced protection to help resist the growth of bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold and mildew in healthcare settings.
Similar to UL 1363A, UL 1363 is intended for standalone devices used outside of the patient care vicinity, such as to power non-medical equipment in a patient care room or devices at a nursing station. UL 1363 provisions safety requirements related to electrical insulation, grounding, overcurrent protection and surge suppression to ensure safe operation and reliability.
UL 1449 sets forth safety standards for both relocatable and hardwired surge protectors used outside of patient care vicinities, including electronic medical records (EMRs) and refrigeration systems, ensuring protection of sensitive medical equipment and devices from compromised data integrity and patient safety. UL 1449 addresses safety considerations such as fire resistance, mechanical strength and electrical insultation and specifies that compliant devices effectively clamp transient voltages and divert surge currents from connected equipment.
